Overview
Body Type & Identification: Large-mouthed, thick-bodied sunfish with a mottled brown and green pattern. Distinctive red eyes and three or four reddish-brown streaks radiating from the eye across the cheek — key identification feature. More resembles a Largemouth Bass in body shape and habitat preference than other sunfish.
Preferred Water Temperature: 68°F–82°F. A warm-water, swamp-adapted sunfish that tolerates stagnant, low-oxygen water. One of the most habitat-tolerant sunfish — found in conditions that stress other species.
Habitat: Swamps, cypress ponds, backwaters, and heavily vegetated lakes throughout the Southeast. Prefers standing timber, thick vegetation, and stumpy, snag-filled water. Common in the Everglades, Okefenokee Swamp, and similar swamp environments. Often found where other sunfish cannot survive.
Best Lures: Small poppers over lily pads produce explosive strikes. Small weedless jigs work in heavy cover. Small inline spinners produce results. Tiny swimbaits near structure catch fish.
Best Baits: Live crickets are the premier Warmouth bait. Small live minnows work very well. Red worms produce consistent catches. Small nightcrawler pieces are effective. Live small crayfish produce large specimens. Light tackle near heavy vegetated cover in cypress swamps and backwaters.
Top 5 Destinations: Okefenokee Swamp GA/FL, Lake Okeechobee FL, Santee Cooper SC, Atchafalaya Basin LA, Lake Seminole GA/FL.
