Viper Moray

Tropical Pacific and Indian Oceans — from Hawaii and the Central Pacific west to East Africa. Found in coral reefs and rocky areas in 3–100 feet. Named for the distinctive viper-like fang teeth that remain visible even when the mouth is closed. A dramatic-looking reef fish encountered by divers throughout the Indo-Pacific.

72°F–82°F. A tropical reef species found in coral and rocky reef environments. Like all morays, hides in crevices during the day and hunts at night.

Best Lures: Not a typical sport target. Best Baits: Caught incidentally on cut bait and squid near tropical reef structure. Use a hook remover or cut the leader if caught — do not attempt to handle by hand.

Typically 2–3 feet. Maximum approximately 4 feet. Mottled brown to olive coloring with the distinctive exposed fang teeth. Handle with extreme care if caught — the teeth cause serious wounds.
