Soupfin Shark

Eastern Pacific Ocean — from British Columbia south to Chile. Also found in scattered Atlantic and Indo-Pacific locations. A slender, schooling shark found in coastal waters over sandy and rocky bottom in 0–600 feet. Common in California — named for its use in shark fin soup. Populations have recovered somewhat since the Vitamin A liver oil boom of the 1940s.

55°F–68°F. A cool-water Pacific shark found in coastal waters. Forms large schools — more social than most sharks. Found in bays and nearshore areas in spring and summer; moves offshore in fall.

Best Lures: Rarely specifically targeted with lures. Best Baits: Fresh whole mackerel is the top bait. Fresh squid works very well. Cut fish produce results. Medium tackle (20–40 lb) in California coastal waters.

Typically 5–6 feet and 100–200 lbs. Maximum approximately 6.5 feet. World record: 98 lbs 12 oz. A slender, elegant shark. Excellent eating — sold as "grayfish" in California fish markets historically.
