Snail Bullhead
Ameiurus brunneus
Overview
Body Type & Identification: A medium-sized bullhead catfish of Appalachian and Piedmont streams — named for its diet of aquatic snails, which it crushes with specialized teeth. Mottled brown to olive. Distinguished from other bullheads by its more elongated body and specific range in clear, rocky Appalachian streams where few other bullhead species occur.
Preferred Water Temperature: 60°F–74°F. Found in clear, rocky streams of the Appalachian Mountains and Piedmont region. Prefers clean water with good current — more sensitive to water quality than Black or Brown Bullhead. Feeds heavily on aquatic snails and mollusks.
Habitat: Clear, rocky streams of the Appalachian Mountain and Piedmont regions from Virginia south to Alabama. Found in the same clean, rocky stream habitat as Smallmouth Bass and Redbreast Sunfish. Requires better water quality than most bullhead species.
Best Lures: Rarely taken on artificial lures.
Best Baits: Nightcrawlers are effective. Small pieces of freshwater snails work well (matches natural diet). Fresh crayfish tails produce results. Small worm pieces near rocky bottom in Appalachian streams. A seldom targeted but interesting species.
Top 5 Destinations: Streams of the Virginia and North Carolina Piedmont, Alabama Appalachian foothill streams — not specifically destination-fished.
