Silky Shark

All tropical oceans worldwide — one of the most abundant offshore sharks in tropical seas. Commonly encountered by offshore anglers targeting Yellowfin Tuna around FADs (fish aggregating devices). Named for the smooth, silky texture of its skin. Highly pelagic — found in blue water far beyond the continental shelf.

72°F–82°F. Extremely common around FADs and tuna aggregations throughout the tropics. An aggressive and persistent shark around FADs — known to bite through fishing lines and steal hooked fish.

Best Lures: Large skirted trolling lures produce incidental catches. Best Baits: Any fresh fish or whole squid near FADs produces Silky Shark activity. Most commonly encountered as incidental bycatch when fishing FADs for Yellowfin Tuna in tropical waters. Wire leader required.

Typically 6–8 feet and 150–350 lbs. Maximum approximately 11 feet. World record: 762 lbs. Faces significant population pressure from tuna longline bycatch.
