Overview
Body Type & Identification: Similar to Longnose Gar but with a shorter, wider snout — the snout width is more than 58% of snout length. Olive to brown with spots on the posterior body and fins. Smaller than Longnose Gar. Found in the same rivers and lakes but tends toward shallower, more vegetated habitat.
Preferred Water Temperature: 68°F–80°F. A warm-water species found in slow rivers, backwaters, and lakes. Surfaces to gulp air periodically. Most active in warm summer months in vegetated shallows.
Habitat: Rivers, lakes, and backwaters of the Mississippi drainage from the Great Lakes south to the Gulf. Prefers slower, more vegetated habitat than Longnose Gar — found in oxbows, backwaters, and lake coves with aquatic vegetation.
Best Lures: Rope lures (frayed nylon) that tangle in the teeth are effective. Topwater lures produce surface strikes. Small swimbaits work near weeds.
Best Baits: Live small shiners are excellent. Small live sunfish produce results. Dead baitfish on a rope lure work well. Light to medium tackle near vegetated backwaters.
Top 5 Destinations: Mississippi River backwaters, Illinois River IL, Wabash River IN/IL, Tennessee River system, Lake Erie tributaries.
