Body Type & Identification: Robust, deep-bodied sunfish with a large mouth extending to below the eye — a key feature. Olive to brown with rows of dark spots and distinctive red eyes. Often called "Goggle-eye" for the prominent red eyes. Larger than most sunfish but smaller than bass — an intermediate size panfish.
Preferred Water Temperature: 60°F–72°F. A cool-water species that shares habitat with Smallmouth Bass — prefers clear, rocky streams and lakes. Spawn in late spring in gravel nests in 1–4 feet near rocks or wood.
Habitat: Clear, rocky streams, rivers, and lakes throughout the Great Lakes region, Ozarks, and Appalachians. Associate with rocky structure, gravel bottom, and current breaks. Found in the same rocky stream habitat as Smallmouth Bass — excellent mixed-bag fishing.
Best Lures: Small tube jigs and soft plastic crawfish imitations near rocky bottom are outstanding. Small crankbaits produce results. Small poppers work near rocky shorelines. Tiny swimbaits produce fish from rocky structure.
Best Baits: Live crayfish are the premier bait — matches their natural diet. Live nightcrawlers work excellently. Live small minnows produce results. Hellgrammites are outstanding in river systems. Light spinning gear with live bait near rocky structure in clear streams.
