A moderately sized grouper found around coral reefs, rocky structure, and reef edges in 10–130 feet. Very common throughout the Caribbean and Florida Keys. The most abundant grouper around many Caribbean island reefs.
Preferred Water Temperature: 70°F–82°F. A tropical reef grouper found in clear, warm water around coral structure. Common in 30–80 feet around coral heads and rocky ledges throughout the Caribbean.
Size & Weight: Typically 1–5 lbs. Maximum approximately 12 lbs. World record: 6 lbs 1 oz. Reddish-orange with scattered white spots — a beautiful reef fish. Good table fare. One of the most commonly caught grouper species throughout the Caribbean.
Best Lures: Small to medium jigs near structure produce strikes. Small swimbaits around reef edges work well.
Best Baits: Live shrimp are very effective. Small live fish produce consistent results. Cut squid works well. Fresh cut bait near reef structure catches fish consistently.
