Overview
Oceans & Range: Eastern Pacific Ocean — from British Columbia south to Baja California and the Gulf of California. One of the most historically important fish in the Pacific — supported the iconic Cannery Row industry in Monterey, California. Populations collapsed in the 1940s–50s, recovered, then declined again. Found in large schools nearshore and offshore.
Preferred Water Temperature: 58°F–68°F. A schooling, migratory species that follows seasonal temperature patterns. Populations fluctuate dramatically with Pacific Decadal Oscillation and ocean conditions.
Size & Weight: Typically 6–10 inches. The most important live bait species for Southern California offshore fishing — preferred over anchovies for larger pelagics due to hardiness and size. Outstanding eating — fresh sardines are among the best-tasting fish in the Pacific.
Best Lures: N/A as a target — used primarily as bait. Caught with cast nets when available.
Best Baits: N/A — Pacific Sardine IS the bait. The preferred live bait for California Yellowtail, White Seabass, Yellowfin Tuna, and Bluefin Tuna. Much hardier than anchovies in a livewell — the top choice for offshore live bait fishing. Buy from bait receivers or catch with a cast net.
