One of the most ecologically important fish in the Pacific ecosystem — a keystone species supporting everything from Salmon to Humpback Whales. Forms massive spawning aggregations in bays. The roe-on-kelp (kazunoko) commands very high prices in Japanese markets — the Sitka, Alaska herring roe fishery is one of the world's most valuable per-pound fisheries.
