Pacific Cod

North Pacific Ocean — from the Sea of Japan north through the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands, and south to the California coast. One of the most commercially important fish in the North Pacific. Found over sandy and muddy bottom in 20–3,000 feet. Very abundant in Alaska — a major target of charter boats throughout the Gulf of Alaska. Outstanding eating — the definitive white fish of the Pacific.

32°F–50°F. A cold-water species found at a wide range of depths. Most accessible to sport anglers in 60–300 feet on sandy and muddy bottom. Excellent winter fishing when other species are less active.

Best Lures: Large jigs (4–12 oz) in white and chartreuse work very well on bottom. Large rubber octopus rigs on heavy jig heads produce consistent catches. Nordic Jig style lures are traditional and effective. Best Baits: Fresh whole herring is the top bait. Fresh squid works very well. Octopus is excellent bait in some Alaskan areas. Charter boats in Homer and Kodiak regularly limit out on Pacific Cod in 100–300 feet.

Typically 3–15 lbs. Maximum over 50 lbs. World record: 55 lbs 5 oz from Alaska. Similar to Atlantic Cod but distinguished by three dorsal fins and subterminal mouth with prominent chin barbel.
