Olive Grouper

Eastern Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea — from the Bay of Biscay south to West Africa including the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, and Azores. Not found in the Western Atlantic. Found around rocky reefs and offshore structure in 30–300 feet. A large grouper of the Eastern Atlantic equivalent to the Western Atlantic Gag Grouper.

60°F–74°F. Found around rocky reef structure in the Eastern Atlantic. Most common around the Canary Islands and West African offshore banks where significant sport fisheries exist.

Best Lures: Large vertical jigs near rocky bottom produce strikes. Large swimbaits work near reef structure. Best Baits: Large live fish are the top bait. Fresh whole squid produce consistent results. Heavy bottom rigs with 50–80 lb leader near rocky Atlantic and Canary Island reefs.

Typically 5–30 lbs. Trophy fish reach 100+ lbs. Olive-green to brown coloring — the namesake olive color. Excellent eating — firm, white meat typical of the grouper family.
