Nurse Shark

Atlantic Ocean and Eastern Pacific — in the Atlantic from Rhode Island south through Florida, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean to Brazil. In the Pacific from Baja California to Peru. Found on sandy and rocky bottom near coral reefs, rock ledges, and mangroves in 1–75 feet. The most commonly encountered large shark by Florida snorkelers and divers — often resting motionless on the bottom in groups.

68°F–82°F. A warm-water, bottom-oriented species that rests in large groups under ledges during the day. Nocturnal hunter. Very docile when undisturbed — a popular shark for dive tourism throughout the Caribbean and Florida Keys.

Best Lures: Rarely taken on artificial lures. Best Baits: Fresh whole squid and cut fish on bottom rigs produce incidental catches. Fresh crabs and lobster attract large Nurse Sharks near reef structure. Handle with care — the jaws are powerful and they do not release easily when they bite.

Typically 7–9 feet and 150–250 lbs. Maximum approximately 14 feet. World record: 214 lbs. Brown to tan coloring with rounded head and prominent barbels. Catch-and-release recommended.
