Overview
1 of 8
Body Type & Identification: Long, torpedo-shaped body with a distinctive duck-bill snout and large mouth filled with sharp, backward-pointing teeth. Dark green body with irregular rows of yellowish bean-shaped spots. A apex predator of northern lakes and rivers — built for explosive ambush attacks.
Preferred Water Temperature: 55°F–68°F. A cool-water species that thrives in the clear, cold lakes and rivers of Canada and the northern US. Most aggressive feeders in spring (just after ice-out) and fall. Slow down in summer heat — move to deeper, cooler water. Outstanding ice fishing target.
Habitat: Clear, weedy lakes and slow rivers of Canada, Alaska, the Great Lakes region, and northern plains. Closely associated with aquatic vegetation — ambush predators that lie motionless in the weeds waiting for prey. Found in lakes, rivers, and connected marshes. The dominant predator of boreal lake systems.
Best Lures: Large spinnerbaits (tandem blade, white or chartreuse) produce aggressive strikes. Large swimbaits (6–10 inch) in perch and sucker patterns are excellent. Topwater lures at dawn on calm water produce spectacular surface strikes. Large spoons (Daredevle) are the classic pike lure. Large jerkbaits worked erratically near weed edges. Large inline spinners like Mepps work well. Wire leader (30–45 lb) is mandatory — their teeth destroy monofilament instantly.
Best Baits: Large live suckers are the top trophy bait. Large live perch work very well. Dead smelt on a quick-strike rig produce large fish. Large whole frozen smelt on a tip-up under the ice is the classic ice fishing technique. Wire leader is always required.
