Night Smelt

Eastern Pacific Ocean — from Alaska south to Central California. Found in nearshore coastal surf zones — spawning at night on coarser sandy beaches. A beloved Pacific Northwest coastal fish known for dramatic nighttime beach runs. Forms nocturnal spawning runs on Pacific beaches spring through summer.

48°F–57°F. A cold-water smelt with nocturnal spawning behavior — runs come into the surf zone after dark on coarse-grain sandy beaches where wave action is moderate.

Best Lures: Not typically hook-and-line targeted. Dip nets during nocturnal beach runs are the primary harvest method. Best Baits: Dip nets on the beach at night during spawning runs — check WDFW and ODFW for open beaches and seasons. Headlamps are essential. One of the Pacific Northwest's most memorable outdoor experiences.

Typically 5–8 inches. Outstanding eating — pan-fry whole in butter for a Pacific Northwest coastal delicacy.
