Lemon Shark

Western Atlantic Ocean — from New Jersey south through Florida, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean to Brazil. Also found in the Eastern Pacific from Baja California to Ecuador. A nearshore species highly associated with shallow coastal environments — mangroves, grass flats, and reef edges. Very common in Florida Bay, the Florida Keys, and the Bahamas.

68°F–82°F. A warm-water species found in shallow coastal environments. Known to tolerate brackish water and occasionally enters freshwater briefly. One of the most common large sharks in Florida waters.

Best Lures: Large swimbaits produce strikes near mangroves. Large poppers attract surface attacks in shallow water. Best Baits: Live large mullet are the top bait in Florida. Live jacks and bluerunners work very well. Fresh whole ladyfish are excellent. 50–80 lb tackle with wire leader is standard.

Typically 6–8 feet and 150–400 lbs. Maximum approximately 11 feet. World record: 405 lbs from North Carolina. Yellow-brown to olive coloring — the yellowish tinge gives the species its name.
