Eastern Pacific Ocean — from British Columbia south to Baja California. One of the largest smelt species — found in the surf zone, nearshore coastal waters, and in bays. Common from California piers. Forms large schools visible from piers. Often targeted specifically by pier anglers using specially tied smelt rigs.

55°F–65°F. Found near the surface in nearshore coastal waters, bays, and around pier structure. Spawns on algae-covered rocks in intertidal areas.

Tackle & Bait

Best Lures: Small Sabiki rigs with hooks tied to float at the right depth are the classic pier technique. Best Baits: Small pieces of shrimp on Sabiki-style multi-hook rigs are most effective. Small pieces of squid work well. A long-shank smelt rig with multiple small hooks at various depths produces consistent catches from California piers.

Typically 10–18 inches and 0.5–1.5 lbs. The largest of the California smelt species. World record: 4 lbs. Silver-green with a distinctive iridescent lateral stripe. Good eating — mild, slightly oily flesh. Outstanding pan-fried whole.
