Overview
Oceans & Range: All tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide. In the Atlantic, from Massachusetts south through Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean. In the Indo-Pacific, throughout tropical coastal waters. Found around coral reefs, grass flats, mangroves, and open water. One of the most common large reef predators in the Caribbean and Florida Keys.
Preferred Water Temperature: 72°F–84°F. A warm-water species found in clear, shallow tropical water. Frequently hovers motionless near structure watching for prey — characteristic behavior that makes them easy to spot and target.
Size & Weight: Typically 5–25 lbs and 2–4 feet. Trophy fish exceed 5 feet and 80 lbs. World record: 85 lbs from Christmas Island. Fast, powerful, and spectacular jumpers when hooked. Large fish may carry ciguatera toxin — consumption of large fish is discouraged in some areas.
Best Lures: Large, fast-retrieved needlefish lures are outstanding. Large silver spoons worked fast produce explosive strikes. Large stick baits and pencil poppers are very effective. Tube lures rigged as needlefish are classic Caribbean barracuda baits.
Best Baits: Live needlefish are the top natural bait where available. Large live mullet work very well. Whole rigged half-beak and ballyhoo produce strikes. Strip baits cut from bonito or any silver-sided fish are effective when retrieved fast.
