Overview
Body Type & Identification: Medium-sized minnow with a distinctive golden-olive to brassy body color and a strongly arched belly. A falcate (curved) anal fin distinguishes it from other shiners. The most widely used live bait minnow in North America — sold at virtually every bait shop in the eastern US. Excellent live bait for Largemouth Bass, Crappie, and Walleye.
Preferred Water Temperature: 65°F–78°F. A hardy, adaptable minnow that tolerates poor water conditions including low oxygen, high temperatures, and turbid water. Widely farmed for the bait industry — the most commercially produced baitfish in the US.
Habitat: Ponds, lakes, slow rivers, and wetlands throughout the eastern US from Canada to Florida and west to the Great Plains. Very common in vegetated ponds and lake margins. Forms the foundation of the bait industry — farmed in enormous quantities in Arkansas, Alabama, and throughout the Southeast.
Best Lures: Not specifically targeted for sport.
Best Baits: Golden Shiners ARE the bait. Large wild shiners (4–8 inches) free-lined under a float or free-swimming near vegetation are the top trophy Largemouth Bass bait in Florida and the South. Buy from bait shops or raise your own. Wild shiners from lakes are generally more durable and effective than farm-raised bait shop shiners.
Top 5 Destinations: Not a sport target — the premier live bait for trophy bass throughout the US.
