Present in the Florida Keys, Caribbean, and throughout the Indo-Pacific. A nocturnal species that hides in caves and under ledges during the day. Related to the Squirrelfish family.
Preferred Water Temperature: 72°F–84°F. A tropical reef species that inhabits coral reef caves and crevices. Nocturnal feeder that emerges at night to hunt small fish and invertebrates near the reef.
Size & Weight: Typically 6–12 inches and under 1 lb. Maximum approximately 2 lbs. Named for the distinctive large, glassy eyes — an adaptation for low-light feeding. Bright red to orange coloring.
Best Lures: Rarely targeted with lures. Small jigs produce occasional catches at night near reef structure.
