Giant Trevally

Indo-Pacific Ocean — from East Africa and the Red Sea east to Hawaii and throughout the tropical Pacific. Found around coral reefs, rocky shorelines, atolls, and in open ocean offshore areas. One of the largest members of the jack family. Also called "GT" by anglers worldwide. Known for hunting in very shallow water over reef flats.

72°F–84°F. Found in clear, warm tropical water around reef edges, surf zones, and open ocean. Stalking and sight-casting to GT on remote Pacific atolls is among the most thrilling fishing experiences in the world.

Best Lures: Large surface poppers are the definitive GT lure — worked aggressively with loud pops near reef edges. Very heavy tackle (PE6–10 braid) is required — they dive instantly for the reef when hooked and must be stopped immediately. Best Baits: Large live fish are outstanding. Large live scad (cigar minnows) produce strong strikes. Fresh whole garfish and needlefish are excellent live baits on reef flats. Heavy spinning or conventional tackle with 60–100 lb braid is the minimum for serious GT fishing.

Typically 20–60 lbs. Trophy fish exceed 100 lbs. World record: 160 lbs 7 oz from Tokara Islands, Japan. A massively built jack with a steep head profile. The most sought-after flats fishing target in the Pacific Islands.
