Overview
Oceans & Range: Atlantic Ocean — from Nova Scotia to Uruguay, throughout the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean. Also found in the Eastern Atlantic from Portugal to Angola. An inshore and nearshore species found in bays, estuaries, beaches, and over offshore reefs. Extremely common throughout Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean inshore waters.
Preferred Water Temperature: 66°F–84°F. Highly adaptable — found from the surf zone to offshore reefs. Roams in large, fast-moving schools chasing baitfish. Regularly enters freshwater rivers and brackish estuaries.
Size & Weight: Typically 2–15 lbs. Trophy fish exceed 40 lbs. World record: 57 lbs 14 oz. A deep-bodied, blunt-headed jack with tremendous power — far stronger than its size suggests. Will hit virtually any lure thrown at a feeding school.
Best Lures: Topwater poppers produce explosive strikes during surface feeding events. Large spoons and swimbaits work at any depth. Jigs produce consistent action. They will strike virtually any lure when actively feeding.
Best Baits: Live shrimp are effective. Live minnows produce consistent action. Cut mullet work well. Live blue crabs attract larger fish. Crevalle Jack are also excellent live bait for Tarpon and large Snook.
