Overview
Oceans & Range: Western Atlantic Ocean — from North Carolina south through Florida and throughout the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean. In Florida, the most popular inshore sport fish on the Gulf Coast — found in mangrove shorelines, tidal rivers, beach passes, and nearshore Gulf waters. Also found along beaches and in passes during spawning season in summer.
Preferred Water Temperature: 65°F–90°F. Highly temperature sensitive — cold kills occur when water drops below 50°F. Concentrate around mangrove shorelines, docks, bridges, and tidal passes year-round. Move to beach passes to spawn in summer.
Size & Weight: Typical catches run 3–10 lbs. Trophy fish reach 30+ lbs. World record: 53 lbs 10 oz from Costa Rica. Identified by the distinctive black lateral line and concave head profile. The "Linesider" — one of the premier inshore sport fish in Florida. Excellent eating — must meet slot size limits (28–33 inches in Florida).
Best Lures: Large soft plastic swimbaits worked around mangrove prop roots are deadly. Large topwater lures at dawn produce spectacular explosive strikes. Weedless swimbaits allow fishing in heavy mangrove structure. Slow-sinking twitchbaits like the MirrOlure work excellently. Bucktail jigs produce in passes and inlets.
Best Baits: Live pilchards (scaled sardines) are the top live bait in Florida. Large live shrimp produce excellent results. Live pinfish work well around bridge pilings. Live mullet are outstanding. Free-lining live baits near mangrove shorelines at dawn and dusk produces the largest fish.
