Overview
Oceans & Range: Eastern Pacific Ocean — from Point Conception, California south to the Gulf of California. Found exclusively in the surf zone and sandy nearshore areas along beaches. A true surf fish — rarely found more than a few hundred yards from shore. One of the most challenging and rewarding surf fishing targets on the West Coast.
Preferred Water Temperature: 58°F–70°F. Found in the surf zone on sandy beaches — specifically in the wash zone where sand crabs are abundant. Follow tidal movements — feeding in the swash zone on incoming tide.
Size & Weight: Typical catches run 1–4 lbs and 16–22 inches. Trophy fish reach 8 lbs. World record: 7 lbs 2 oz. A sleek, copper-silver surf species with a distinctive wavy pattern on the sides. Lure-only regulations apply in California — no bait fishing. A cult-status species among California surf anglers.
Best Lures: Sand crab imitations (DOA Shrimp, Gulp! Sandworm) are the top lures — match the size of sand crabs in the surf. Small soft plastic baits in crab and shrimp colors work well. Light spinning gear with 8–12 lb line is standard. Patience and reading the surf is essential.
Best Baits: Note — California regulations prohibit bait fishing for Corbina. Lures only. Sand crab imitations are the most effective artificial presentation. Learn to identify sand crab colonies in the wave wash — Corbina will be nearby.
