Oceans & Range: Circumtropical in all warm oceans — Indo-Pacific, Indian Ocean, and Atlantic. In the Pacific, found from Hawaii south through the Central Pacific. In the Atlantic, ranging across tropical and subtropical latitudes. A smaller, schooling tuna species commonly encountered while targeting other tunas and pelagic species.
Preferred Water Temperature: 70°F–82°F. Prefers warm tropical and subtropical surface waters, typically above 70°F. Schools often visible at the surface chasing small baitfish.
Size & Weight: A smaller tuna species — typically 1–4 lbs and 12–18 inches. Maximum size approximately 8 lbs. Excellent light tackle sport fish and an outstanding bait species for larger pelagics including Blue Marlin, Sailfish, and Wahoo.
Best Lures: Small feather jigs (2–3 inch) in white or blue-white produce fast action. Small chrome spoons cast into schools produce instant strikes. Small surface poppers attract surface-feeding fish. Light spinning gear with small metal jigs work well. Small skirted trolling lures produce when fishing at trolling speed.
Best Baits: Small chunks of squid are highly effective. Small pieces of sardine or mackerel produce. Live small baitfish catch fish quickly when schools are located. Bullet Tuna themselves are excellent live and dead bait for larger pelagic species — they are more highly valued as bait than as a target species by most offshore anglers.
