Bluespotted Sunfish
Enneacanthus gloriosus
Overview
Body Type & Identification: A tiny, brilliantly colored sunfish with iridescent blue spots on a dark olive to brown body and blue streaks on the cheeks. One of the most colorful of the small sunfish species. Similar to Banded Sunfish in habitat preference — found in acidic, tannic coastal plain waters of the Southeast.
Preferred Water Temperature: 65°F–80°F. Tolerates very acidic, tannin-stained water in blackwater coastal plain stream systems. Often found in vegetation-choked, slow-moving water in the Southeast coastal plain.
Habitat: Blackwater streams, swamps, and bog ponds of the Atlantic and Gulf coastal plain from New Jersey south to Florida and west to Texas. Closely associated with aquatic vegetation and organic-rich sediments in dark-water systems. Often co-occurs with Flier and Mud Sunfish.
Best Lures: Micro jigs near vegetation. Tiny soft plastics work well.
Best Baits: Tiny worm pieces. Small crickets. Wax worms. Ultra-micro tackle needed for this small species — a target for dedicated micro-fishing enthusiasts.
