Bluefin Trevally

Indo-Pacific Ocean and Eastern Pacific — from East Africa east to Hawaii and the Pacific Islands. Found around coral reefs, rocky shorelines, and nearshore areas in clear, warm tropical water. A smaller relative of Giant Trevally — common throughout Hawaii and the Pacific Islands. One of the most brilliantly colored jacks — vivid blue fins with blue and gold spots on the body.

72°F–82°F. Found in clear, warm tropical water around reef systems. An aggressive predator that hunts along reef edges and in open water near structure.

Best Lures: Small to medium poppers produce strikes near reef edges. Small swimbaits work well. Vertical jigs produce fish at depth. Best Baits: Small live fish are excellent. Live small crabs work around reef edges. Small squid produce consistent results. Medium tackle with 20–40 lb braid near tropical reef systems.

Typically 5–20 lbs. Maximum approximately 40 lbs. World record: 24 lbs 9 oz. Outstanding eating — firm, white meat with excellent flavor.
