Overview
Oceans & Range: Eastern Pacific Ocean — from Baja California south through Central America and down to Peru. Found around rocky reefs, offshore islands, and seamounts in 30–150 feet. A Pacific snapper distinct from the Atlantic species sharing a similar common name.
Preferred Water Temperature: 66°F–78°F. A Pacific reef species found in cool to warm tropical water around rocky structure and reefs. Common around offshore islands and seamounts along the Mexican and Central American Pacific coast.
Size & Weight: Typically 2–8 lbs. Maximum approximately 15 lbs. A dark-colored snapper of the Eastern Pacific — excellent table fare that is highly prized throughout its range.
Best Lures: Medium jigs worked near structure produce strikes. Swimbaits around reef edges are effective. Bucktail jigs with cut bait catch fish consistently.
Best Baits: Live and dead squid are excellent. Fresh cut fish work very well. Live small fish produce consistent strikes. Bottom rigs with cut bait near reef structure are standard.
