Overview
Oceans & Range: All tropical oceans worldwide — closely associated with oceanic islands and offshore seamounts. In the Pacific, found around Hawaii, the Revillagigedo Islands, Clipperton Island, and from Baja California to Ecuador. In the Atlantic, throughout the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. A powerful, dark-colored jack found in clear tropical water.
Preferred Water Temperature: 72°F–84°F. A tropical species found in clear, warm water around reef edges, drop-offs, and the open ocean near islands. Often found in small groups or solitary.
Size & Weight: Typically 5–20 lbs. Maximum approximately 40+ lbs. World record: 39 lbs 0 oz. A dark, almost black jack with a robust, powerful body. Known for extremely strong, determined runs — one of the hardest-fighting jacks.
Best Lures: Large poppers produce spectacular strikes near reef edges. Large vertical jigs work at depth. Heavy swimbaits in natural colors are effective. Large spoons cast near structure produce strikes.
Best Baits: Live small fish are the top bait. Whole fresh squid produce consistent results. Large live crabs work around reefs. Fresh cut fish in a chum slick attract fish.
