Big Skate

Large, diamond-shaped disc with a long tail. Brown to gray above with distinctive eyespots (ocelli) on the wings and a pale underside. Adults can reach 8 feet in total length and exceed 200 lbs, though most caught by anglers are smaller.\n\n

Best Baits: Squid, cut herring, mackerel, sand dabs, shrimp.\n\n

Bottom fishing on sandy flats and bay mudflats. Strong fighters on medium to heavy gear. The "wings" are edible and considered good table fare — often compared to scallops in texture. Use heavy leader and remove the hook carefully as they can thrash vigorously.
