Enneacanthus obesus
Overview
Body Type & Identification: A very small sunfish with distinctive dark vertical bands on the sides — one of the few sunfish species with prominent banding rather than spots. Olive-brown with 5–7 dark vertical bars. Found in quiet, acidic, vegetation-choked coastal plain streams and ponds of the Northeast. One of the smallest sunfish species.
Preferred Water Temperature: 62°F–76°F. Tolerates very acidic, low-pH water (as low as 4.5) — found in habitats inhospitable to most other sunfish. A specialist of tea-colored coastal plain stream systems.
Habitat: Quiet, vegetated streams, swamps, and ponds of the Atlantic coastal plain from New Hampshire south to South Carolina. Associated with submerged vegetation in slow-moving, acidic, tannic water. Rarely found in clear or alkaline water — a specialist of bog-like stream systems.
Best Lures: Micro jigs and tiny soft plastics produce catches. Very small inline spinners work.
Best Baits: Tiny worm pieces on micro hooks. Small crickets work well. Wax worms are effective. Ultralight tackle with tiny hooks in quiet, vegetated coastal plain ponds and streams.
Top 5 Destinations: Pine Barrens streams NJ, Long Island coastal ponds NY, Coastal plain ponds of eastern Massachusetts, Dismal Swamp VA/NC, Waccamaw drainage NC/SC.
