Oceans & Range: Found in all temperate and tropical oceans worldwide. In the Pacific, commonly caught offshore from Washington, Oregon, California, and Baja Mexico — typically 30–300 miles offshore following the 60°F water temperature break. In the Atlantic, caught from New Jersey to Puerto Rico, in the Gulf of Mexico, and off Cuba. A highly migratory species that makes trans-Pacific migrations.
Preferred Water Temperature: 58°F–72°F. The most temperature-sensitive of the major tunas — they follow the 62°F–65°F temperature break religiously. Water color change lines and temperature breaks concentrate fish dramatically.
Size & Weight: Typical sport-caught Albacore run 15–35 lbs and 24–36 inches. Trophy fish exceed 50 lbs. The IGFA all-tackle world record is 88 lbs 2 oz. Pacific Albacore average 15–25 lbs; Atlantic fish run larger.
Best Lures: Trolling cedar plugs is the classic technique — run 4–8 lines at various distances. Hex heads and jet heads in blue-white or all-white produce excellent results. Feather jigs trolled at 6–9 knots draw consistent strikes. High-speed trolling with Zuker-style lures works when fish are scattered. Once located, casting metal jigs (Tady 45, Salas 7X) into surface schools produces explosive strikes.
Best Baits: Live anchovies fly-lined behind the boat after slowing down produce aggressive strikes — "biting the iron" then switching to bait is the classic Pacific approach. Frozen squid on a jig is highly effective. Live sardines are excellent when available. Fresh-dead mackerel rigged on a casting jig produce large fish. Chunking with cut butterfish attracts and holds fish near the boat in the Atlantic.
