Overview
Oceans & Range: All tropical oceans worldwide. In the Atlantic, found from Massachusetts south through Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean to Brazil. In the Pacific, from Baja California to Peru. Associated with offshore structure — wrecks, reefs, buoys, and oil platforms in 60–200 feet of water. The juvenile form (threadfin jack) looks dramatically different from adults.
Preferred Water Temperature: 70°F–84°F. An offshore tropical species found around structure in warm, clear water. Concentrates near wrecks and reefs in 80–200 feet, often near the base of the structure.
Size & Weight: Typically 10–30 lbs. Trophy fish reach 50+ lbs. World record: 50 lbs 8 oz. Distinguished by long, filamentous streamers extending from the dorsal and anal fins — particularly pronounced in younger fish. An excellent food fish with firm, white meat.
Best Lures: Large vertical jigs dropped to structure are the top technique. Large swimbaits worked near bottom produce strikes. Heavy bucktail jigs tipped with cut bait are effective. Jigging at depth near the base of wrecks is most productive.
Best Baits: Live blue runners are the top live bait. Large live shrimp produce consistent results. Fresh whole squid are excellent. Large live pilchards and pinfish work well. Bottom fishing with cut bait near offshore structure catches fish consistently.
